flea market finds

My sister in law texted me Friday afternoon wondering if I’d be interested in some girlie time over the weekend. She wanted to go to the flea market, did I want to join her? Did Thing 1 want to join us? Did Baby K want to join us?
Thing 1 quickly said Baby K didn’t want to join us. In doing her best to keep Baby K safe, Thing 1 hasn’t taken her out of their house or our house but to go to the doctor the week after her birthday in April, and for the trip from GA to VA in July.

YBW asked which flea market before reminding me that “We’re decluttering”. Then he volunteered to look after the baby while we were gone. So between her daddy and Papa, Baby K was in high cotton and didn’t really care that her mama and Birdie weren’t home.
Meanwhile, I’ve pretty much ‘decluttered’ all my personal things so I went on with a clean conscience.

Shen-Valley Flea Market was a bit disappointing. We were later on in the day and most vendors already cleaned up and left, of the few remaining, most were cleaning up. To be perfectly honest though, it was disappointing. Thing 1 found some great crystals, other than that it was mostly junk.
But that’s OK because we stopped at the flea market at Warren County Fairgrounds on our way to Shen-Valley.

While we sifted through many unnecessary things, we did find treasure!

I sent this photo to Thing 2 with the words: I kind of think you need it. Do you?
Her response: I kinda need it if you haven’t left yet.

When I went back to get it, I noticed something interesting.

Now I (really really really) hope she’ll start using Ken McClure as her pseudonym.

Thing 1 found a seven inch iron skillet in excellent condition. My sister in law is into antique jewelry and found a beautiful peridot(?) ring for a little bit of nothing.

A bag of wooden spools for Baby K.
You know, as an ECE I’m all about open ended toys. She already plays with antique French bobbins and wooden spools, so these just added to her play.

And then I found this!

At first, I couldn’t justify buying it because I didn’t know what I was going to do with it. But the more I looked at it, and touched it, the more I knew I wanted it. So, I haggled with the guy and got a price that pleased me.
It is currently sitting on the antique singer sewing machine we use as an end table, but I don’t think it’ll take long for me to discover its perfect use.
I did a little research and I’m happy to report I got this spool box for a steal!
I now know interesting things about Clark Thread Company, like they created a new way to spin cotton into thread when silk stopped coming into Scotland from France because of Napoleon. They called this ‘our new thread’ and the O.N.T (as seen on the box) was born.
How cool is that!?! I got a super cool (cotton) spool cabinet and a history lesson! It doesn’t get much more Roby than that!

We even stopped at Naked Mountain Winery on our way home.
It was lovely to have a girlie adventure day!
We’re going to make it a more regular sort of thing and all the guys expressed interest, so our next adventure will be co-ed.

I’ve spent so much time in lock down. So much time focused on the two houses, and getting things ready to have my daughter’s family here. I forgot how much fun it is to just spend a day doing spontaneously random things.
We need more shoot days. More flea market days. More spending the day in the park days.
I feel a bit like Belle…

Even if it’s just toodle-pipping around the flea market.

we’re gettin’ crafty up in here

YBW and I decided to make wine bottle candle holders for the tables at our reception. We’ve been saving bottles for a bit and ended up with two dozen.
I watched loads of youtube videos and read everything I could about how to do it. We got a wine bottle cutting kit and went to town.

YBW started to score them while I got the next step ready.

We tricked the bottles into breaking by dipping them in simmering water and then into an ice bath. This worked the way we wanted it to most of the time…some of the bottles broke in ways that were undesired, and a even a few that were unexpected.
We sanded them and cleaned them and lined them up.

We started out with twenty four bottles and ended up with fourteen that we could use.

Add a bit of sand and a tea light and voila, a cool decoration for the tables.
We’re so dang crafty.

surprise find

My friend and mentor just so happens to be here in Virginia teaching a group of preschool teachers. She and her beloved, one of the most delightful men on the planet, stayed the weekend to spend time with her grandson. YBW and I were lucky enough to be able to meet them for an early dinner yesterday in Winchester.

I’ve been going to Winchester my entire life. My grandparents lived there, my dad grew up there. Let me tell you something: Winchester isn’t like it used to be. They’ve worked hard to make the little downtown area hip. It was not remotely hip during the seventies and eighties.
YBW’s never been so we decided to head out early, that gave us time to wander at our leisure before we met for dinner.
We went into this great little shop Make Nest Interiors because YBW saw this on a drastic sale.

It’s a globe stand, sans the globe. I think we should put some sort of glass sphere in there…perhaps even a disco ball. He’s not buying into the disco ball. He’s smart like that, cause I’m just being ridiculous for my own entertainment.
BUT…while we were in there looking around, I found our wedding wine glasses!

They’re absolutely perfect! I’m very excited!

This wedding thing becomes more real each day. I’m ready. Let’s go!
We tasted cake on Friday evening and chose some pretty delicious almond flavored cake. Our Wash and Zoe are going to be pretty adorable on top of it.
Tomorrow we’re meeting with the event coordinator at the winery.
Wedding. Wedding. Wedding.
I love it, but I may need a nap.

Right now the Nats game is on, my fave, Jayson Werth hit a two run dinger and I’m happy. Stephen Strasburg can’t pitch worth a damn. But it’s OK, I’ve got my sweetie next to me on the sofa, a beer in a glass on the table in front of me and I might take a nap when the game is over.

Thing 2 comes the day after tomorrow! Our countdown is almost over! I told her today that I was going to smother her with kisses and she replied that “super-duper Thing 2 hugs” were headed my way! (That’s what she called her crazy tight hugs when she was a little girl, so I know what to expect!)

It’s a pretty great Robynbird day! Beautiful glasses to toast with my husband on our wedding day. Nats on the telly and beer in my glass. Thing 2 here Tuesday morning. And most likely a nap.
Now that’s what I’m talking about.

I can hear the bell

YBW and I went out to Naked Mountain yesterday. The weather was gorgeous, more like later on in May than the end of April. The winery was jumpin’ with folks on blankets and adirondack chairs on the big hill.
Wine club members are still picking up their orders and we got a bottle of wine and a charcuterie plate just for showing up. We sat on the small deck for a while before going about the business of purchase.

On the way we stopped off at the church where we’re getting hitched.

The church is honestly one of the most precious places I’ve ever seen! I love the church building and the graveyard. I can’t wait for the photos to be taken in the fall. I think it will be even more gorgeous than it is now!

There is a bell in the side yard of the church. I was so excited to ring it yesterday and have visions of the most perfect photos of us ringing it on the say of our wedding.

We’re closing in on six months…I say, “Bring it!”

drink naked (wait, what?)

wpid-20150412_143006.jpgThis is my afternoon.

Naked Mountain Winery (Not only a great winery, but also our wedding venue.) has the rather saucy tagline “Drink Naked”.
They also have wines called “Red Light”, “Skinny Dipper”, “Birthday Suit”, and “Make Me Blush”.
I think it’s actually quite clever. The owners are playful about their names, but very serious about their wines.

This bottle is from the wine club shipment…three of these reds came…only one is left unopened. (I’m feeling a trip up the mountain this weekend.)
Happy Thursday.
Drink Naked.

choosing a photographer and the s’mores bar

Wedding planning is in full swing.
I’m equally excited and anxious. That’s normal I suppose…but somehow doesn’t seem quite right.

The most important things to me are a photographer and the venue.

The venue is sorted, Naked Mountain Winery. (Beautiful inside and out and such delicious wine! Sundance especially loves the fact our invitations will contain the word ‘naked’.)

The photographers I had my heart set on are booked on our day. (Though I didn’t stamp my feet, I did have a teeny moment of pouting, with the protruding lip and everything.)
I rallied quickly and began the search, eventually settling on three photographers.

I sat with YBW and looked at their online portfolios…I’m not all that sure it was easy for him. In his defense, he admits it’s not as important to him as it is to me, and he’s also quick to point out my eye is very different than his. But I noticed he made pretty astute observations and had enough feedback to help me understand where he was coming from.
I spent Saturday afternoon and evening emailing with our top two picks setting up appointments to meet with them this week. The first one Tuesday, the second on Thursday. I like the idea of meeting with the both in one week, it will be easier for me to make my decision.

Been emailing with the caterer too. She’s absolutely spectacular! We’re going to meet with her a week from Sunday for a tasting and to discuss the contract.
When we talked originally, I told her how fall was my favorite season and YBW and I have this quirky love of chicken pot pie. (Of our children, only Thing 2 enjoys this dish, and only recently. So it’s normally just we two.)
She presented us with a sample menu filled with delicious looking foods including roasted root veggies and roasted brussel sprouts. (Yeah…that’s pretty much just me.)
But the thing (apart from the pot pie) that piqued our curiosity is the inclusion of a s’mores bar. Handmade marshmallows, handmade graham crackers and artisan chocolates. (Um…yes please!)
Looking forward to meeting with her and trying some of these yummies and goodies!

All in all now that the planning is active and not preliminary my excitement is growing exponentially. I think YBW’s is too. Obviously different aspects are more important to one of us than the other, but it’s been fun to plan with him. I like hearing his ideas. I enjoy sharing mine.
I’ve learned he’s much more traditional than I am when it comes to the idea of a wedding. We’ve had more than one conversation about how cupcakes are a great alternative to a fancy (and expensive) wedding cake that nobody will eat. (Duh! S’mores bar!)
I suggested letting Thing C wear Chuck Taylor high tops because they are his daily shoe and I want the personalities of our children to be represented. YBW wasn’t too sure about that…but I think he’s coming around. He was very specific about writing our own vows, something I hadn’t even thought about.
I’m adamant about being “prayed over” or “blessed” and he has no care about this one way or another.
We’re figuring out how we want to present the joining of our lives the the people we love. We’re figuring out how we want to do this together. One step at a time. We’re walking these steps together and that’s really all that matters.
