OK, now I gotta go to school!
Though I fully agree with Azrael, that (there is) “No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater than central air.”, I’m completely obsessed with porch life.
It’s a work in progress.
I’ll find other things we need as time goes on. I’m building a bar-height dining table from gorgeous reclaimed red oak. Then I’ll have to shop for chairs and possibly an umbrella too! Aww dang, won’t that be horrible?
I sit out here every chance I get. YBW came home yesterday and I holler into the house, “Come have porch life with me!” Then about an hour later, Sundance came in through the front door and straight out the back door onto the porch.
It’s my current favorite place to hang out. Sometimes we come out here with beers or hard cider. Sometimes just a Coca Cola. It’s a place for great conversations. It’s a place to enjoy good food and company.
I’ve got my freshly brewed peach tea in a glass filled with ice, and I’m heading out.
I’m telling y’all, it’s the only way to live!
Ran to Costco yesterday.
Everyone and their third cousin was up in that joint.
Nobody knew how to drive a buggy. Nobody knew how to load their items on the belt.
Bunch of freaking lollygaggers!
And I’m on the phone with Thing 1 having an absolute fit about it!
She is howling with laughter about how she learned to drive from me (fuming and cussing without really being mad) because that’s how I was rolling through the big ol’ warehouse store.
In the checkout line, the woman in front of me parked her buggy at a 45 degree angle instead of moving it straight up. That was the last straw for me.
I whispered into the phone, “The chick in line in front of me. I’m going to punch her right in the back of her head. Hard.”
Thing 1 laughed and said, “One day someone will hear you and you’ll get in a real fight. I’ll have to come to come see you at the hospital where you’ll be handcuffed.”
We laughed and laughed.
Though that would be just my luck…
I said goodbye to her before I checked out. (I may be a bitch, but I’m not rude. I think it’s so disrespectful to cashiers to be on the phone while they’re helping you.)
I did call Thing 1 back to report the ridiculous way the cashier backed my box. Eggs underneath peanut butter? Really, bitch?
Thing 1 had quite a laugh at me!
Of course I wasn’t quite finished with my spitting rant, so I called Sundance. If there’s anyone to join you in a crazy, spun-up rant, it’s Sundance. And that was just what I needed!
I’m all screeching and shouting and cussing and she’s feeding me with a spoon. At one point only dogs could hear us.
And then it stopped.
And I said, “This is my anxiety manifesting itself.”
And just like that (finger snap) I was calm.
This is something for me to pay serious attention to.
And I mean Serious Attention.
My anxiety is heightened right now. My stress levels are elevated.
I know this. I’m working to manage this. But sometimes it manifests in shopping rage. And in reality, nobody was harmed. I didn’t punch that woman. I avoided handcuffed hospital visits and possible jail time.
Managing my anxiety is an active process.
I’ve got good help.
I’m learning to let go. I can’t control everything, however much I long to. I’m working at not taking things so seriously. I’m working at making sure my expectations are realistic.
So…sometimes I want to punch strangers in the back of their heads. And sometimes I want to stab people with my ice pick. (It’s metaphorical, I swear! I never carry one in my bag or anything…I’m not remotely shifty…)
But wanting to punch or stab is not actually doing either.
So it’s cool.
Just gotta keep paying attention. Knowing I feel stressed or anxious is good, knowing why is better. Knowing how to manage those feelings is best.
Right now I’m at better…gives me something to strive for.
For the moment, that’s good enough for me.
Yesterday was spent downtown.
We met my Charleston family (sans nephew) for lunch at one of our favorite places, Jestine’s Kitchen. Mac and cheese, green beans, and unbelievably yummy fried chicken, (which I ate in my systematically OCD way of picking off and eating the fried bits, picking the meat off of and discarding the bone and then eating all the meat).
We wandered and shopped King Street. Jessica had a list we needed to check off, I was just along for the walk.
Turns out that I did a little shopping too. What’s curious about this shopping is that I only purchased things for myself. That’s unusual for me, normally I purchase for everyone else first.
It was fun though, because I bought sort of silly and frivolous things.
As we walked past Copper Penny, I saw a scarf on a mannequin in the window that made us stop and go in. It was the only one in the shop and the girl climbed into the window to get it for me.
I may have a slight scarf ‘problem’…if I don’t reign it in, it could blossom into a full fledged addiction. (Surely, there are worst things I could be addicted to…so scarves might just be OK.)
Candlefish was so cool! They even have candle making classes! I diffused oils, so I never really burn scented candles, but they had some really lovely ones. Of course I bought these adorable bobby pins at the candle shop. And that makes a kind of sense that really doesn’t. Who really cares? I absolutely adore these little moon and star hair pins!
In a curious little boutique called lou lou, I bought this precious little headband.
After a visit to my Charleston family for more cocktails and time near the fire pit, Jessica and I went over the Tattooed Moose for a late dinner. Their french fries are cooked in duck fat. I mean, my God those fries!!
This beer though!
After all that we came home and watched Chadwick Boseman as James Brown.
If you haven’t seen it, you simply must!
Today, we’ve eaten breakfast, watched the parade, and gone through a box of old photos. Now we’re watching Hairspray while I write…
We’re going to Sweeny’s for dinner this evening.
Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!
My favorite James Brown song.
Please listen responisbly.
I’ve become obsessed with LuLaRoe clothing.
Sundance lives in their leggings. They are the softest damn things I’ve ever felt! They’re oftentimes referred to as “butter soft”. (They ain’t lyin’.)
I’m not about the leggings. But I found out they make dresses. That’s it, y’all, I’m hooked!
Until I tried on the “Julia”
It’s a tee shirt dress that is flattering as hell! I expected it to be shapeless, or worse, cling in all the wrong places. But it’s “butter soft” like the leggings, the perfect length with the perfect length sleeves (almost to the elbow). I have three of these and one more on the way.
I have one “Cassie” skirt. The softest damn navy and gray striped little pencil skirt you ever did see. I have one pair of blue leggings to wear under one of my “Julia” dresses, if you fold it up a little, it becomes a tunic and the leggings are cute under it. I don’t foresee more leggings in my life…but who knows?
Here’s what the Julia dress looks like in real life.
Heather gray with a navy cardigan (cardigans are my #1 go-to article of clothing), a cream, navy, gray, mustard and burgandy scarf and (gorgeous) brown boots.
(It’s an instagram photo so I had to lose my head to show the cute boots.)
If you don’t know LuLaRoe, you must check it out.
Leggings and dresses and tunics and raglan tees and skirts, even “kimonos” (little sweater-y type things to wear over everything else), in women’s and girls sizes. Even “Mommy and Me” items that match or coordinate. This stuff sells like hot cakes! Everything is reasonably priced, comparable to local women’s clothing stores, and sometimes better made.
They’re all designed here in the U.S. with a limited number (1000) items per fabric pattern. That could mean any item could be any pattern. Some of them are not remotely my style, but others are absolutely fabulous!
I’ve learned in the last three weeks that people are simply mad about these clothes! You can’t refresh photos and type “sold” in the comments fast enough on the facebook “pop up sales”.
I love these clothes so much, I’m seriously considering becoming a LuLaRoe consultant. YBW and I are ironing out the logistics. He was reluctant at first, but the more we talk about it, the more open minded he becomes. I’m not a “sales” kind of girl, but I’ve already got a client base built up and ready to shop with me. The opportunity to “do what I love” excites me. I absolutely love clothes! And I absolutely love these LuLaRoe clothes!
If I’m a consultant, I’ll have first dibs on Amelia and Julia dresses to add to my collection.
My friend and mentor just so happens to be here in Virginia teaching a group of preschool teachers. She and her beloved, one of the most delightful men on the planet, stayed the weekend to spend time with her grandson. YBW and I were lucky enough to be able to meet them for an early dinner yesterday in Winchester.
I’ve been going to Winchester my entire life. My grandparents lived there, my dad grew up there. Let me tell you something: Winchester isn’t like it used to be. They’ve worked hard to make the little downtown area hip. It was not remotely hip during the seventies and eighties.
YBW’s never been so we decided to head out early, that gave us time to wander at our leisure before we met for dinner.
We went into this great little shop Make Nest Interiors because YBW saw this on a drastic sale.
It’s a globe stand, sans the globe. I think we should put some sort of glass sphere in there…perhaps even a disco ball. He’s not buying into the disco ball. He’s smart like that, cause I’m just being ridiculous for my own entertainment.
BUT…while we were in there looking around, I found our wedding wine glasses!
They’re absolutely perfect! I’m very excited!
This wedding thing becomes more real each day. I’m ready. Let’s go!
We tasted cake on Friday evening and chose some pretty delicious almond flavored cake. Our Wash and Zoe are going to be pretty adorable on top of it.
Tomorrow we’re meeting with the event coordinator at the winery.
Wedding. Wedding. Wedding.
I love it, but I may need a nap.
Right now the Nats game is on, my fave, Jayson Werth hit a two run dinger and I’m happy. Stephen Strasburg can’t pitch worth a damn. But it’s OK, I’ve got my sweetie next to me on the sofa, a beer in a glass on the table in front of me and I might take a nap when the game is over.
Thing 2 comes the day after tomorrow! Our countdown is almost over! I told her today that I was going to smother her with kisses and she replied that “super-duper Thing 2 hugs” were headed my way! (That’s what she called her crazy tight hugs when she was a little girl, so I know what to expect!)
It’s a pretty great Robynbird day! Beautiful glasses to toast with my husband on our wedding day. Nats on the telly and beer in my glass. Thing 2 here Tuesday morning. And most likely a nap.
Now that’s what I’m talking about.
How much I LOVE Christmas!
I love shopping!
I love the music!
I love going to dinner with YBW after buying loads of candy for stockings.
It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year!
