when porch life is work

Saturday was one of those rare gorgeous summer days. Sunny and breezy temperatures in the 80’s no humidity to speak of. Of course I took advantage of the beautiful weather by spending the day on the porch but not in the way you might think.
There was no lounging about. No day drinking. No journaling.
It was work work work!
Wanna see?

This reclaimed red oak needed a little love in the form of stain before it becomes our outdoor dining table.

Fence posts are the perfect choice for this bar height table’s legs. A coat of Sikkens is about to protect them even though they’re pressure treated.

Remember I said it was breezy? The plastic blew right over that last post…once I put down the camera, I was able to sort it and got quickly to work.

These “flaws” are what drew me to this piece of wood in the first place. I believe it makes them even more lovely.

Once I got everything finished and lined up to dry, I took a much needed break.

With a little “House Wine of the South” and my special birthday birthday Queen straws from Sundance.
But wait!
There’s something even more exciting!!
I realized that I could “have my cake and eat it too”!
I wanted to be outside in the breezy weather. But I also wanted to be in front of the TV watching the Nats game.
Oh my goodness!

To my surprise and delight, I realized I could sorta-kinda see the game and have porch life at the same time!

The table top wood was still drying Sunday afternoon, so we moved it into the house and set a fan on it. Everything else was already dry so it went back into the garage. It’s raining today, and supposedly tomorrow also, so there will be no actual construction for a few days.
I’ll keep y’all posted on the progress…right after I go shopping for chairs, and perhaps a sail cloth for shade over that part of the porch. Might need some pillows too…guess we’ll just have to see.

International Week of the Birthday ~ day seven

Well, my birthday night Nats game was a rain out. Postponed to create a double header for Sunday. I wasn’t even bummed! I totally expected the rain out.
But we didn’t find out till we were already on the road. It’s cool, with some quick thinking we decided on an early dinner at an Irish pub in Fairfax. I drank my fill of Harp and ate the most delicious grouper. (Not traditionally Irish I know, but good golly it was yummy!)
Headed back home in rush hour traffic in the pouring rain, made a quick stop for ice cream before coming home to open my pressie.

New (Nats) sneakers. Jammies. A book, two movies (La La Land included!) and a CD so Alan Cumming can sing me sappy songs whenever I want.

At school, the kids in the lunch room sang to me on two separate occasions. The boys in the classroom sang to me in the morning when I dropped off the cupcakes we would share that afternoon, and when we had the cupcakes! They even made me cards! Sweet boys!

I got “happy birthdayed” all over social media. Received many a text and phone call celebrating me with love. Precious Thing 1 even sang to me!
All in all, it was a great day!

For starting out slowly, and some disappointing bumps along the way, I have to say that International Week of Robynbird’s Birthday has been a success!
Most importantly, I celebrated myself!
I felt celebrated by those around me. Got to do, and eat things I love. Was able to treat myself to pretty purple toe polish, and a brand new handbag. Had to threaten to show my driver’s license to someone that didn’t believe I turned forty six. And over all just felt super-loved. Even by people who weren’t near me.

Today is the last day of IWotB and I intend to capitalize on it! That means special dinner (I’m not sure what it’ll be just yet.) and I’m thinking…angel food cake with fresh berries. Yum!
Happy Birthday to me!

(my) first game of the season

Another “curly W” on the books!

Friday was my first Nationals Park game of the season. I was rocking my ‘Respect the W’ tee and my #28 Jayson Werth (the “Greasy Hobo”) jersey. I drank 3 beers, and ate Thing 2’s favorite cheesy-bacon fries.
YBW and I met this precious couple visiting from Scotland. They were at their first MLB game and we taught them loads about baseball!

Here you see The Hobo on third, Bryce Harper on first, and what looks like my beloved Ryan Zimmerman at the plate.

I almost never flip through the programs, I just put them in the bag and move along…but this day for some reason I did. And look what I found!

I love that Zim loves House of Cards!

It was a 4:00 game so the sun was on us the entire time we sat in the 230 section. But that’s OK I came out of the park unburned! I’ve never sat in this section before and was pleasantly surprised to find this view outside the ballpark.

Even though we missed getting our Daniel Murphy bobbleheads (thanks, Good Friday traffic, for making an hour drive take over two hours) we beat the Phillies. And that is always satisfying as hell! We’re going back the the park next week, and again on my birthday…until then I’m satisfied watching the guys on TV.
They kicked the crap out of the Braves last night 14-4. Bryce hit two homeruns, one was a grand slam. Zim hit a grand slam. It was beautiful to behold! Sweet baby Jesus, Freddie Freeman is the devil and I do so love seeing him get beat!
Ain’t baseball great!?!

what a great Sunday

All the leftover wind from the hurricane arrived in the DC metro area about two o’clock this morning. With it came cool air and gorgeous sunshine.
Finally! Autumn air!
YBW and I went out this morning, without a real plan, just knowing we wanted to be out on this beautiful day.
We went into Haymarket to a little coffee shop called Hidden Julles Cafe for carry out coffees and small treats.
Then we went down to the railroad crossing…pretty much because I’m a sucker for train tracks and YBW indulges my wacky. The track bed had recently been replaced with brand new wooden ties. All the old ties were stacked up along the tracks.
2-20161009_14 2-20161009_21
There were even rails lined up on the other side of the railroad ties.
2-20161009_18
We found loads of railroad spikes. I’ve been collecting railroad spikes literally since I can remember. YBW kept picking them up and handing them me, until there was a total of nine. Gah! I can’t abide odd numbers! As I’m saying this to him, YBW leans down and picks up another spike. Then he looks at me and asks if I really need all these railroad spikes?
Well…no. Not really. So I lay them all out and pick through to find the two I want to keep.
2-20161009_23

We left Haymarket for Manassas Battelfied.
2-20161009_30
We walked through the woods to the teeny bridge over Young’s Branch. We wandered the battlefield, where the long, end-of-summer grasses were blowing in the crazy wind. After a trip to my beloved Henry House, we went down to the Stone Bridge over Bull Run.
2-20161009_69

We came home in time to watch my Washington Nationals win the second playoff game against the Dodgers with a score of 5 to 2.
5-2

What a great Sunday!

this girl is ready for postseason baseball

I feel like bustin’ loose!
This girl is ready for some postseason baseball!

My Washington Nationals are hosting the LA Dodgers today at 5:30 and tomorrow at 4:00. I’ve crossed every possible appendage for swift at-home victories. We have the ability to beat them, especially with our home field advantage as long as these boys can keep it together.

washington-nationals

We’ve got some great ball players!
We’ve suffered the blow of losing our very own Buffalo, catcher Wilson Ramos to an ACL injury. But Lobaton and Severino are good catchers.
MVP Bryce Harper and Baseball God, Daniel Murphy are both coming off the DL…neither at quite 100%.
Rookie phenom Trea Turner is as great at the plate as he is in the outfield. Danny Espinosa has been a home run hitting machine of late.
We’ve got Werth and Zim, “Two Bag Tony” Rendon ready to go!

the-beardy-bunch

“Mad Max” Scherzer on the mound today.

Ain’t baseball great!?!
N!A!T!S! Nats! Nats! Nats! WOOOOO

rain delay

Rain delays at Nationals Park rarely bode well for my team. They don’t like not being able to get out there when they’re ready…
I think adrenaline changes from fuel to poison in their bodies when they have to wait.
Rain delays make everybody sad.

20160930_183713.jpg
This is what it looked like when we got to the ballpark last night.
OK. Cool. We’ve got this.
We knew it was raining.
We knew the possiblity existed that we’d be dealyed. In fact, we sat at home debating whether or not to even go. But, YBW wanted the ‘Election Night’ give away, so we decided to brave the rain.
9-30-16
My husband is a curious beast…but I adore him!

As we sat (undercover) and watched the rain come down, I suggested we wait till 8:00 and make a decision then.
I was rocking my lularoe leggings with my “Respect the (curly) W” tee and my Werth jersey. I didn’t wear my Zim jersey because he wasn’t playing last night. YBW teased me that just wanted to wear my red jersey because he and Thing C were wearing their white jerseys and I just wanted to be different.
Um…no, dude. Sometimes I just need to rep the Hobo!
20160930_183940.jpg
Of course, by the time 8:00 came around, I’d just gotten a beer…I mean I had to finish it, right? And, only a moment later, it was announced that play would begin at 8:45. We decided to stay put!

The crew came out to fold up the tarp.
OK! Let’s do this!
20160930_200902.jpg

This job fascinates me…but I’m glad it’s not my job. Those guys work their booties off!
20160930_201336.jpg

Well, as it turns out…the rain never really stopped, it just became a fine mist and the wind picked up. So damp clothes and breezy conditions make for chilly baseball fans. The score was 4-1 in the Marlins favor and we were pretty much done.
We gave up just in time to miss Rendon hit a dinger and then Stephen Drew follow him with another one to tie the score.
Miami ended up winning 7-4.
I’m telling you, rain delays don’t bode well for my Washington Nationals.
It’s OK though, we’re the NL East champions! We’re going to play (and beat)¬†the Dodgers to get to the Cubs (that’ll be a miracle, but we’re due one) to then get to the World Series. At least, that’s the plan. The Dodgers will be tough for us…we only beat them once in six games this season.
But I’ve got my #Natitude so I say, “Bring it!”

walk off

YBW and I went to the Nats game last night.
screenshot_2016-09-09-18-59-53.png
We bought $5 same day tickets up in the 400 section. This isn’t where we normally sit…but last night was more about the giveaway than being at the game.
Last night was the “fan choice” Michael A Taylor bobblehead.
20160910_094141.jpg
Michael A is YBW’s favorite Nat. He had an AMAZING spring training and then faltered when they came home to Nationals Park. So much so that he was sent back down to Syracuse. He was called back up a week or so ago..he’s got talent, but he’s green. Only more practice will enable him to fulfill his potential.
I entered the park before YBW because I was in the fast line, the woman at the turnstile gave me my bobblehead and told me Michael A was signing them in the fan store. I wanted to kiss her! I told her she made my whole night! I told her my husband was going to be “pants peeing” excited! So we went over to the line at the fan store and as we walked up, the guy said, “I’ve cut off the line to make sure everyone gets their bobblehead signed.”
I went into “momma lioness” mode. Seriously, please let my husband meet Michael A!
Nopity nope. (Big meanie jerk. He’s one of Jenna Marbles’ “People that need to pipe the f**k down”.)
As it turns out it didn’t matter that we didn’t get in line to have the bobble head signed. We went into the fan store and waited patiently. Sure enough Michael A walked right past YBW and gave him five! I have no photo of this because a very tall and extremely rude man stood slap in front of me. (He needed to “pipe the f**k down” too. I did elbow him when I moved…hard. Then I turned with the most horrified look on my face and apologized. He was all smiles…jackass.)
But I did sneak a pic of Michael A as he sat down, so go me!
20160909_1747460.jpg

I got my nachos and we made our way to our seats.
It was hot and I was sweaty, but the sky was pretty!
snapchat-3345808243609542188.jpg
We were hosting the Phillies. Now, in my experience, Philadelphia fans are the worst fans on the eastern seaboard…probably in the entire US. The football fans are worse than that baseball fans and the hockey fans are worse than the football fans. The Phillies fans come here to our beautiful ballpark and act like a bunch of dicks.
It’s just bad manners, you know?

Luckily, there were no Phillies fans near us. Only some seriously die hard Nats fans.
That said, it was the longest, most boring game in my baseball experience. And I spent years watching my brother play little league!
Left fielder, Jayson Werth (Thing 2’s favorite Nat, we call him the “Greasy Hobo”) wasn’t feeling the first two innings. At least he wasn’t wearing his glove on his head as he sometimes does when he’s bored.
snapchat-6713430539880308536.jpg
Let me tell you, I freaking LOVE baseball and I was bored to tears…
This is how I spent my time…snapchatting Sundance, Thing 2, and Thing C.
Sundance has declared that second baseman, Daniel “Hits” Murphy will be her third husband. He replaced MVP Bryce Harper for that title, pretty much because she grew weary of Harp’s shenanigans…and the fact that Murph is a freaking amazing ball player!
snapchat-8562452156745325555.jpg
As much as I love Thing 2’s Hobo, my baseball heart beats for first baseman, Ryan Zimmerman.
snapchat-4094431871239264690.jpg
Ugh. This game was just as long and tedious as the portion of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I like to call “Harry Potter and the Never Ending Camping Trip.”
Last night I sent this text to Sundance: #washingtonnationalsandtheneverendinggame
The game was scoreless till the fourth inning. Philly scored at the top of the inning but we scored at the bottom. So we’re still tied, but at least it’s 1-1 now and no longer 0-0.
After cheering, I went back to snapchatting.
snapchat-4504530437641516594.jpg
Fifth inning was scoreless. The Hobo was just cooling his heels out in left field.
snapchat-3379212195309805127.jpg
Y’all heard that in ‘Vampire Willow’s’ voice too, right?

We were up 4-1 at the bottom of the seventh.
Alright! This game finally got interesting. Not because we were winning, but because we were finally making plays, we’re scoring runs. (Well, maybe it was a teeny bit good because the Phillies were losing. F**k the Phillies.) Anyway, that only lasted a moment because there was a Phillies three run homer in the top of the eighth inning.
Now we’re tied 4-4 in the middle of the eighth.

Have I mentioned we need a freaking bullpen? UGH! These pitchers! The very talented Joe Ross on the DL. Stephen “Crybaby” Strasburg (looks like freaking Shaggy from Scooby Doo) just got signed for seven more years but can’t stay off the DL. Gio is the least consistent damn thing. I mean when he’s on, he’s hot. But when he’s off he can’t pitch more than four innings.
Do you understand what I just said? The starting pitcher can’t pitch more than FOUR FREAKING INNINGS!?!
Roark is talented and becoming more and more consistent.
So pretty much the only pitcher we can truly rely on is Max Scherzer.
(Scherzer is Thing C’s favorite player.)
And don’t even get me started on the relief pitchers! We’ve got a couple good ones…but then we’ve got crap.
Anyway…bullpen rant over.

Even though going to the game last night was all about getting YBW his bobble head and not really about being at the game, it always sucks when your team loses…or when games go into extra innings. Especially when you’re a cranky red haired girl who’s already tired and hot and sweaty and bored. (I swear to you I’m an adult even though right now I don’t sound like one.)

But miracle of miracles is rookie Trea Turner. This kid is a phenom! He saved us from extra innings with his walk off second home run of the game.
Boring game, but we won. More importantly YBW got his Michael A bobblehead and slapped five.
Ain’t baseball great!?!

baseball and the first amendment

We went to the Newseum on Friday before we headed over to the Nats game.
Two of my absolute most favorite things!
I was getting my dork on something fierce at the Newseum!
Newseum
Do you know on the front of the building is printed what I consider the most important words ever written in the history of the United States?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Those words! Even just writing them here on this page gave me the gooseflesh.
I don’t think many folks ever really think about the importance of the first amendment. I think about it every single day. I am a woman in a country where I can say what I think without worrying about my safety. I can have a relationship my God without the interference from the government. I can read any news and know that it’s been (mostly) fair, unbiased, and not at all controlled by the government.
What would have happened to Woodward and Bernstein, or Ben Bradlee and Katharine Graham in the early 1970s if there was no first amendment?
Look how many places there are in the world where this isn’t the case!

Newseum Freedom of the Press Map

Newseum Freedom of the Press Map

I am the first amendment’s biggest fan! (I’m so sure there are loads of folks who say the the same thing. But I’m not talking about them today, I’m talking about me.)
I’m oftentimes jaded about our government. I’m oftentimes jaded about our archaic constitution. But I have moments when I am at one with the concepts that helped create our government…

It was steamy at Nationals Park Friday night. Gio Gonzalez pitched beautifully. Both Daniel “Hits” Murphy and Thing 2’s beloved “greasy hobo”, Jayson Werth hit solo dingers. Murphy had a ground out RBI and Werth hit an RBI double. The “face of the franchise” Bryce Harper hit a two run triple.
We cheered. We clapped. We high-fived and fist-bumped all night long. There were beautiful plays in the field. The boys of summer where on it Friday night!
The Nats won in a walk off the first game of their series with the Rockies. (as it turns out, it was the only win of the series)

champagne and a grand slam

Took Thing C and Thing G to lunch then got Thing G’s hair cut. (Barber shops are fascinating places.)
Champagne cocktails with my neighbor this afternoon. Now I’m watching my Washington Nationals winning on TV.
What a great Robynbird day!

controversial weather

Starting at 9:00 this morning sleet began falling from the sky. About half an hour later there was lightning and thunder then the sleet changed to snow.

This is what our back porch looked like right after the switch.
20160409_091334.jpg

There is such controversy regarding “climate change”, but this little redhaired girl has to wonder what record cold temps and sleet and snow on April 9 has to say about that controversy.

Happy Spring, y’all!
(I’m just glad I don’t have tickets for the Nats game today. I love baseball, but not enough to sit out in this ridiculousness.)
