flying by the seat of your pants

Here’s a random thing I like about YBW: his ability to fly by the seat of his pants. That’s isn’t a trait I’m especially good at and he’s teaching me how to…be inclined to try it. Isn’t that fortunate? Flying by the seat of your pants isn’t as anxiety inducing when you’ve got somebody holding your hand.

Yesterday we went out with the plan of visiting a (new to us) winery, with the possibility of stopping to take photos as we might be moved.
Turns out we had old information because when we pulled up to the vineyard, the gates were locked and a sign told us the hours of operation were Friday – Saturday – Sunday 11 to 5. So much for open daily 11 to 5.

In that moment we had a choice.
Let disappointment suck the air out of our sails, or quickly regroup and come up with a plan.
When I suggested we go to “our” winery, YBW asked if I really wanted wine. Not so much.

So we drove along route 55 for a while and found this abandoned barn.

Only this farm wasn’t abandoned, it was just dilapidated. It was actually home to some cows, and a (fairly) modern tractor was parked near the fence.

Since we were nearly there and neither of us had recollection of ever actually being there, we decided to check out Front Royal to see what the little town had to offer.
We ate a yummy lunch before wandering Main Street. It was mostly antique shops, but we had fun. You never know what you’re going to find.
I bought an old glass phone line insulator.

I haven’t yet decided what I’ll do with it, which should always be the first step in purchasing something you don’t really need. But I love the color of it. The history. The fact it has the company name on it.
It’s probably just something that will need to be dusted, but I don’t care. I wanted it. And I spent less than $20 from my babysitting money to own it.
(Is it funny that a grown ass woman talks about her babysitting money? Yeah, it kind of is. But two of my sweetest friends both celebrated their wedding anniversaries the end of June and needed someone to look after their children.)

Anyway, my sweet husband and I had a lovely day together just flying by the seat of our pants.

something shiny with your name on it

I ordered the wedding favors today.
Wine charms. Little silver discs stamped with each guest’s name.
I ordered them via Etsy from a girl in Kansas called Coco. I’m not sure why I love that so much. But it really tickles me.
I even ordered one for each of the children. Now, the little kids can’t drink wine, but everybody loves something shiny with their name on it. I’d love to see my little D tie his to his bike as a name plate…must remember to suggest that to his dad.

I have all the mad lib responses back except for one of Ben’s frat brothers who apparently lost the invitation, Sundance and her family, and my sister-in-law and her family.
Sundance knows I’m shaking my head at her, but I also know they’ll be there. Sundance has known YBW since they were in elementary school and Girlie Thing is reading at the wedding.
My sister-in-law and her family aren’t going to be able to make it. She and I have already talked about that. I am sad, but I understand. It’s about doing what’s right for your family, and right now them coming here for a weekend in October isn’t going to work. I told her that our love was solid and it was fine if they didn’t come. I do have a bit of sadness, but I understand how hard it is to make everything work for your family.
Thing 2 and Boyfriend D’s responses finally arrived early this week which made me SO happy!

I’ve given the final count to both the caterer and the event coordinator and the three of us will meet at the winery next week to make sure we’re well sorted.

There’s a laundry list of things that still need to be completed.
I’ve got time.
Sort of…next week is October. I better get a move on.

surprise find

My friend and mentor just so happens to be here in Virginia teaching a group of preschool teachers. She and her beloved, one of the most delightful men on the planet, stayed the weekend to spend time with her grandson. YBW and I were lucky enough to be able to meet them for an early dinner yesterday in Winchester.

I’ve been going to Winchester my entire life. My grandparents lived there, my dad grew up there. Let me tell you something: Winchester isn’t like it used to be. They’ve worked hard to make the little downtown area hip. It was not remotely hip during the seventies and eighties.
YBW’s never been so we decided to head out early, that gave us time to wander at our leisure before we met for dinner.
We went into this great little shop Make Nest Interiors because YBW saw this on a drastic sale.

It’s a globe stand, sans the globe. I think we should put some sort of glass sphere in there…perhaps even a disco ball. He’s not buying into the disco ball. He’s smart like that, cause I’m just being ridiculous for my own entertainment.
BUT…while we were in there looking around, I found our wedding wine glasses!

They’re absolutely perfect! I’m very excited!

This wedding thing becomes more real each day. I’m ready. Let’s go!
We tasted cake on Friday evening and chose some pretty delicious almond flavored cake. Our Wash and Zoe are going to be pretty adorable on top of it.
Tomorrow we’re meeting with the event coordinator at the winery.
Wedding. Wedding. Wedding.
I love it, but I may need a nap.

Right now the Nats game is on, my fave, Jayson Werth hit a two run dinger and I’m happy. Stephen Strasburg can’t pitch worth a damn. But it’s OK, I’ve got my sweetie next to me on the sofa, a beer in a glass on the table in front of me and I might take a nap when the game is over.

Thing 2 comes the day after tomorrow! Our countdown is almost over! I told her today that I was going to smother her with kisses and she replied that “super-duper Thing 2 hugs” were headed my way! (That’s what she called her crazy tight hugs when she was a little girl, so I know what to expect!)

It’s a pretty great Robynbird day! Beautiful glasses to toast with my husband on our wedding day. Nats on the telly and beer in my glass. Thing 2 here Tuesday morning. And most likely a nap.
Now that’s what I’m talking about.

drink naked (wait, what?)

wpid-20150412_143006.jpgThis is my afternoon.

Naked Mountain Winery (Not only a great winery, but also our wedding venue.) has the rather saucy tagline “Drink Naked”.
They also have wines called “Red Light”, “Skinny Dipper”, “Birthday Suit”, and “Make Me Blush”.
I think it’s actually quite clever. The owners are playful about their names, but very serious about their wines.

This bottle is from the wine club shipment…three of these reds came…only one is left unopened. (I’m feeling a trip up the mountain this weekend.)
Happy Thursday.
Drink Naked.

choosing a photographer and the s’mores bar

Wedding planning is in full swing.
I’m equally excited and anxious. That’s normal I suppose…but somehow doesn’t seem quite right.

The most important things to me are a photographer and the venue.

The venue is sorted, Naked Mountain Winery. (Beautiful inside and out and such delicious wine! Sundance especially loves the fact our invitations will contain the word ‘naked’.)

The photographers I had my heart set on are booked on our day. (Though I didn’t stamp my feet, I did have a teeny moment of pouting, with the protruding lip and everything.)
I rallied quickly and began the search, eventually settling on three photographers.

I sat with YBW and looked at their online portfolios…I’m not all that sure it was easy for him. In his defense, he admits it’s not as important to him as it is to me, and he’s also quick to point out my eye is very different than his. But I noticed he made pretty astute observations and had enough feedback to help me understand where he was coming from.
I spent Saturday afternoon and evening emailing with our top two picks setting up appointments to meet with them this week. The first one Tuesday, the second on Thursday. I like the idea of meeting with the both in one week, it will be easier for me to make my decision.

Been emailing with the caterer too. She’s absolutely spectacular! We’re going to meet with her a week from Sunday for a tasting and to discuss the contract.
When we talked originally, I told her how fall was my favorite season and YBW and I have this quirky love of chicken pot pie. (Of our children, only Thing 2 enjoys this dish, and only recently. So it’s normally just we two.)
She presented us with a sample menu filled with delicious looking foods including roasted root veggies and roasted brussel sprouts. (Yeah…that’s pretty much just me.)
But the thing (apart from the pot pie) that piqued our curiosity is the inclusion of a s’mores bar. Handmade marshmallows, handmade graham crackers and artisan chocolates. (Um…yes please!)
Looking forward to meeting with her and trying some of these yummies and goodies!

All in all now that the planning is active and not preliminary my excitement is growing exponentially. I think YBW’s is too. Obviously different aspects are more important to one of us than the other, but it’s been fun to plan with him. I like hearing his ideas. I enjoy sharing mine.
I’ve learned he’s much more traditional than I am when it comes to the idea of a wedding. We’ve had more than one conversation about how cupcakes are a great alternative to a fancy (and expensive) wedding cake that nobody will eat. (Duh! S’mores bar!)
I suggested letting Thing C wear Chuck Taylor high tops because they are his daily shoe and I want the personalities of our children to be represented. YBW wasn’t too sure about that…but I think he’s coming around. He was very specific about writing our own vows, something I hadn’t even thought about.
I’m adamant about being “prayed over” or “blessed” and he has no care about this one way or another.
We’re figuring out how we want to present the joining of our lives the the people we love. We’re figuring out how we want to do this together. One step at a time. We’re walking these steps together and that’s really all that matters.

mini-break bliss

We’re home from mini-break and back into the real world.
Please let me tell you that 5:15 came damn early this morning.

We had the most lovely weekend! The American Shakespeare Center/Blackfriars Playhouse and it’s production of All’s Well That Ends Well was spectacular!
We walked everywhere all weekend, ate delicious food at the quirkiest little places, my favorite of which was Cranberry’s Grocery and Eatery. We wandered through quaint little shops, even visited the Woodrow Wilson Presidential library.
Saturday morning we accidentally came upon Thornrose Cemetery and both had a wonderful time exploring!
We discovered a teeny little camera museum and I listened with awe to the strange little man talk about the history of photography and cameras. (Did I mention I’m a dork?)

We chose well when we decided which winery to visit on our way home and came away with five bottles!
The only thing we didn’t get to do was have decadent dessert and cappuccino…but that’s OK because I had slice of delicious cherry pie after my lunch on the way home.

The short time we were away seemed so long! It was the perfect opportunity to “check-out” for a little while. We enjoyed just being away together…but when we got into bed last night, each of us expressed our happiness at being able to sleep in our own bed.
Dorothy knew what was up when she said, “there’s no place like home.”

let’s get this show on the road

YBW and I are going on a mini-break this weekend and I am so ready to get on the road. Two year olds make for exhausting playmates, I’m looking forward to spending time with my grown-up playmate.

It’s Autumn! My favorite time of year and we’re going to wander the streets of a small historic Virginia town and catch a Shakespeare play. I plan to do a bit of holiday shopping…never know what I’ll find in those cute little shops on the main street.
I want a ridiculously decadent dessert and a frothy cappuccino late at night for absolutely no reason! I want to hold YBW’s hand and walk down the sidewalk in the crisp air without a care in the world. The only specific thing YBW said he wants to do is visit wineries on the way home…though I think he’s excited about the play.
We’re both just ready for a little time off…to be together away from home…just a mini-break from the daily goings on.
I think we deserve it.
