feeling inspired

screenshot_2017-01-17-09-17-15-copy

Inspiration sometimes comes from the most surprising places. Thing 2 shared this old photo on facebook this morning. She has been uberpositive of late and it moves me greatly!

I took a screenshot to share.
It got me thinking:
Love the you that you are!
And love the you that you were. Sure, those you(s) need work…so do the work! But always love yourself unconditionally while you do the work.
Treat yourself with kindness!
You deserve to be treated with kindness. That starts in you, be kind to yourself. How else will others know to treat you with kindness?
Share your inspiration!
Stories of ‘failures’ are just as powerful as stories of ‘success’. We all “wore Crocs” at some point in our lives. That is both a good and perhaps a not so good thing. Embrace it. Let it be a source of hope and inspiration!

And in the words of my daughter: “Just freaking worship yourselves, okay?”
You deserve it!

bite the bullet (journal)

20170107_192209.jpg
So I’ve begun a new (to me) way of getting and keeping myself organized. I spent a great deal of time and effort at my work table planning and executing this organizational process and I think I’ve finally got it just right!
With many notes, and even more lists, and a collection of pinterest photos for inspiration, I tentatively began to consider actually writing in the new book…
It kind of reminded me of Thing 2. I gave her a red moleskine notebook for Christmas one year, just like Dash and Lily’s and she was crippled by it. She couldn’t bring herself to write in it in case she “messed it up”. #perfectionist
I felt the same way. I even went so far as to reach out in journaling groups for advice on how to quell the anxiety about getting started. I didn’t want to bugger the brand new book. #spazz

vader
And that’s applicable to both myself and my second born child.

I finally bit the bullet (Ha! That’ll be funny in a minute to you too!) and actually got started. Of course, I had to make several lists and mock up pages before I could begin work in my actual book. I’m a freaky planner. #madskills

It’s a bullet journal.
If you’ve never heard about it, check out this vid:

I use my phone calendar, but I’m a pen and paper kind of girl and rely on an analog way of keeping myself well sorted. YBW likes to tease my by calling me a luddite. I don’t hate technology…I just like colored pens and paper. #artist
I bought a Leuchtturm1917 notebook.
20170115_193622.jpg
Like all good Southern girls, I monogramed that s**t. #preppygirl

The Leuchtturm has dotted pages. Now this is not at all like any other journal I have. I prefer lined pages. But the cool thing about the dots is that with a ruler and pen, you can create pretty much any sort of form you need. #crayola
20170107_173710.jpg

I built a calendar first thing. Month at a glance and then a weekly calendar.
Built in many calendars…some things must be planned in advance. #organizationgoals
The more research I’m doing and the more posts I see about bullet journals, I’m realizing most people don’t build out their calendars so far in advance. But that’s the beauty of the bullet journal, you can build it however it works best for you! And this is how it works best for me.
20170108_115650.jpg

I built a page to track my weight loss.
I mean, hey, it’s not the simplest thing to get your body at it’s healthiest. If a cute little spread in your journal makes it more fun, then it’s that much easier! #healthyeating
20170108_160406.jpg

I also think my reading prescription needs to be adjusted…I was having a bit of trouble working on these pages even with good light.
That’s OK though…it’ll give me an excuse for adorable new reading glasses! #sexyat45

be the Queen of your own world

kathy-kinney

Years (and years and years) ago I told my therapist I wanted to be Queen of the World. She suggested I consider being “the Queen of yourself”.
That stuck with me.
I’ll never be Queen of the World, but I sure as hell can be Queen of myself. Queen of my own world.

It’s how you choose to function in the world that helps you be the Queen of your own world. Remember that because it is so important. We can’t control what happens around us, we can only control how we respond to it.
I have moments of foaming at the mouth and losing my s**t when things don’t go my way. But by actively living my intention, I continue to learn how to respond, and practice responding to those moments with grace, love, and gratitude.

I am the Queen of myself.
I rule my own world.
Works for me…ruling the whole world sounds a might exhausting.

stay warm my friends

Yesterday I slept late (till 9:00) and woke to the most beautiful sight!
SNOW!!!!!
First snow of the season makes for a super smiley Robynbird!

I took photos out the front door.
20170107_121930.jpg

And on the back porch.
20170107_114023.jpg

It only snowed about an inch and a half, maybe two…
But the wind!
Oh my golly did the wind howl!!
The temperature never crept above 25. But the wind chills were in the single digits.

This morning I woke up at 8:00 and it was 13 with a real feel of -6.
Yeah, y’all read that right! Negative six degrees!
Brrrrrrr!

So my plans for errand running in an adorable dress, tights and boots became me staying home in my jammies and hoodie and warm fuzzy socks to do homework and lula and work on my new organizational system…and hang out with YBW near the fireplace!

live well and longer

img_0126

I adore everything about this!
It’s all true.
It’s simple enough to do every day.
If you’re not already doing it, doing it will change your life.
If you’re already doing it, you know how wonderful it really is.

I already love without measure. That’s just who I am.
I sort of eat half…
I walk between two and three miles a day at the elementary school.
I never ever laugh enough! Must laugh more!!
So, while there’s obviously room for improvement, it looks like I’m already on my way to living well and longer!
I say, Go me!

blessings of love and light

We made our annual pilgrimage to the National Cathedral Monday to see the crèche exhibit.
I made a quick stop in Bishop’s garden on my way around the cathedral.
2-20161227_49
It always seems to be cloudy when we go. I’ve looked back at four years of photos and the sky is gray in every single one.
2-20161227_48
Doesn’t make it any less beautiful, but it sure would be nice if the sun would make an appearance once in a while.

I turned my attention to the cathedral. Much less scaffolding than in previous years. The repairs from the 2011 earthquake are coming to an end.
2-20161227_7
Something stopped me in my tracks on the sidewalk towards the front of the cathedral.
What could it be?
Why robin birds, of course!
There were five of them flitting about the grass and sidewalk as we made our way around the building.
2-20161227_1
I was so excited I could hardly stand myself! I spent quite a bit of time watching and photographing these little birds before I could tear myself away to go inside to see all the baby Jesuses.

Downstairs, I peeked in on my most beloved space, the chapel of Joseph of Arimathea.
2-20161227_28

Then onto the nativities.
This one was made in Zimbabwe of jacaranda wood.
2-20161227_30
I like that the figures are tall and lanky. I like that the shepard cradles the lamb in a way that mimics the way Mary holds her baby. I do so love nativities in which the momma holds her son.

Of course, there is something to be said of the baby bundled up in a basket.
This one was specifically made for the collection in Jamaica at the request of a Cathedral docent.
2-20161227_32
I love that he sleeps with a little smile on his face. How many parents have watched our own babies sleep the same way?

This one is hand painted pottery from Turkey.
2-20161227_39
I like that it’s just the Holy Family. I also love the traditional Ottoman style of the flowers and designs, not to mention the little rugs especially made for this nativity.

I remarked to YBW that I would only purchase a nativity if it was somehow unique or particularly beautiful. Well, this one sort of met both criteria.
2-20161227_45
This gourd was specifically chosen then hand carved in Peru. I particularly love the stars on the back of the lid. (not pictured)

After going through the crèche exhibit, I found my way to the teeny chapel to say my prayers.
2-20161226_161741
I kneeled on the prayer bench and gathered myself before I began. After my conversation with God, I lit my candle in benediction. As the light grew brighter, my blessings reached far and wide to touch those for whom it was intended. My love and hope are overflowing.
2-20161227_41

We left the cathedral and headed to the Ellipse to check out our National Christmas tree. I mentioned before that I love when Hanukkah and Christmas coincide. And I honestly can’t remember a time in my life that both the menorah and the tree were lighted at the same time.
Monday was the third night of Hanukkah.
20161227_52
(Of course I was on the back side of the menorah.)

YBW wanted to look at all the state and territory trees, but I decided to stay in the inside circle around the big tree. All the trains were set up and running…so many little villages and trains…
2-20161227_75
If you look closely, you can see the train circling the base of the tree.

My grinchy heart not only grew three sizes that day, it was filled with the love of ‘ten Grinches plus two’!
I’m waiting patiently for twelfth night. In the meantime, I’m still lighting menorah candles and saying my prayers each night between now and New Year’s Eve.
May the light of my candles bless and keep each and every one of all y’all.

everybody’s fly

I finally stopped listening to Christmas music today.
Sad face Robynbird.
But when I went back to my ‘regular’ playlist I heard a little Blondie, and was glad I’d left the Christmas music behind.
Fab five Freddy told me everybody’s fly.

Please listen responsibly.

A very Robynbird Christmas!

I must have “been an awful good girl” because some of the things Santa brought me include:

Books to read.
(The Alton Brown one is signed!)
20161226_185

Markers for coloring.
(Dying to use these brush tips!)
20161226_091751.jpg

Tickets to a show.
(Box seats! What? What?)
20161225_081248.jpg

The solar system on a chain.
(Even Pluto little Pluto!)
20161226_090824.jpg

An angel for my baby Jesus.
(Actually a tree topper, but I don’t care!)
2016-12-26-11.44.00.jpg.jpeg

The stars and creche, and a new shepard and animals.
(Tears of joy!)
2016-12-26-09.12.40.jpg.jpeg

There was also the softest blankey in the history of the world. Perfume and a new bathrobe. Music from Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday celebration. A Christmas color book, and new gloves. The I Love Lucy box set. And a blu-ray Adventure with Alice to save the Hatter!

Thanks, Santa Baby!
xoxo
