October gratitude

As I look back on October, it was chock full, and I have much to be grateful for.

While this may not be what I’m most grateful for, I can assure I am most excited about it.
My Washington Nationals winning the World Series!
Those seven games were something to behold! Winning four away games, losing three home games. We laughed. We cried. We were ready to admit defeat. We literally jumped for joy when we won game seven! This post season was some of my most emotional baseball, but every moment was worth it!

I’m also super grateful for these things:

my acupuncturist
popcorn and coke with YBW at the double feature of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot
Bobby Flay’s new cookbook
teaching and learning with kindergartners, second, fourth, and fifth graders
celebrating our anniversary (4 years married, 10 years together)
whiskey cocktails at the distillery with Holly
my favorite bookshop, Bards Alley
breakfast with Nora
a visit to Naked Mountain

HGTV’s Rock the Block
going to the movies by myself on a Friday morning
Thing 1, Thing 2, and Baby K here!
cocktails
weird weather
Baby K’s giggle
Halloween as the Mystery Gang

(Thing 1 as Velma, YBW as Freddie, Baby K (in the wagon) as Scooby Doo, Thing 2 as Shaggy, and me as Daphne)
good talks with my girls
celebrating Meredith’s ninth birthday
truly wonderful friends and neighbors
Baby K still smiles when I say, “Birdie loves you, girl!”

Happy Halloween

Today I was Pippi Longstocking and YBW was a Jedi Knight.
We rocked it!

We popped a bottle of bubbly and sat on our porch to greet trick or treaters.
Some of our favorite kids came by, some others we just saw photos of.

I LOVE Halloween!
Have a spooktacular night, y’all!

Little D’s pumpkins

Little D came to spend the night Saturday!
He is currently obsessed with all things Halloween. I’ve decorated the house for fall, and he was actively trying to help me bring out the Halloween decorations too. After a long-winded explanation of the difference between meteorological fall and the autumnal equinox, and how Halloween stuff couldn’t come out till October, Little D was looking at me like, WTF? I just want to get out the jack-o-lanterns! YBW saved the day when he said, Remember, you can’t decorate for Halloween till after your dad’s birthday. (October 2)
Little D looked at YBW and nodded.
Dude was sad as hell looking.
So I told him he could come back over after his dad’s birthday and help me decorate for Halloween.

He decided he wanted to draw some pumpkin pictures, so we got out the crayons and paper.

This is a “kitty pumpkin” because it has a cat face. It’s also got wings so it’s a flying pumpkin.
I dunno, I’m just repeating what I was told.

I drew this one and then he embellished it with a brick wall and teeth and nose for the big pumpkin. He also mimicked the pinks and purples of the sky out the window. Then with great purpose added a crescent moon.

Here you see pumpkins and a witch’s broom sweeping fall leaves, also some ghosts saying “ooooo” cause “it’s scary like that”.

Next we decided to make scarecrows.

I’ll leave it up to y’all to decide which of us drew which one.

We watched Disney’s Robin Hood snuggled up on the sofa with a big bowl of popcorn before I read him a story and tucked him into bed.
Sunday morning we made bacon and had a little facetime chat with Thing 2. YBW got up and made the french toast and it wasn’t longer before Little D was on his way.
That kid. I love him so.
He said he’s going to be a bat for Halloween…but he’s worried about red eyes. He had a teeny little ramble about my daddy going to paint my eyes…I don’t want paint in my eyes…it hurts…then I have to wash my eyes…
He looked at me with a truly bewildered look on his face.
I reassured him that his daddy wouldn’t hurt his eyes, and he would be a great bat, even if he had his regular eyes instead of red ones.
He smiled with his entire being and wrapped his arms around my neck. “You are awesome!”

Yeah I am, Little D. And so are you!

dog and pony show

I’ve been known to say: Weddings are nothing more than a dog and pony show. But I’m all about the most perfect ones for my daughters.
Well as it turns out I’m planning one for myself and YBW…
It doesn’t feel like a dog and pony show. Perhaps that’s because we’re going low key. Less than sixty people, just our children as attendants. Teeny church we’ll pack to near full even with so few. Intimate reception space. Good wine, dearest friends and family, s’mores bar…

I’m torn between that feeling of excited anticipation and the desire for it all to just be over.
I feel exhausted and overwhelmed from planning.
I am so joyful that our most beloved people will come together to celebrate with us.

Later this morning, Thing 2 and I will have our final dress fittings, drop off extension cords, the napkins and wine charms and response book to the decorator. I think these are the last errands to run. At least I hope they are. I need to do a quick tidy before Thing 1 and the guys arrive tomorrow. But other than that I want to lie low. Do my best to relax so I can shake the exhaustion and feeling of being overwhelmed.

I went to a meeting about a job yesterday. I was leery of scheduling it for this week, my fear of not having enough time gripped me like a noose. But I took a big breath and went. I’m glad I did, because I believe it was successful and I’ll be getting an offer while I’m honeymooning.
It was weird to do something non-wedding related.
My head was bad yesterday, but I was able to dazzle at the meeting.
Thing 2 and I camped out on the sofa yesterday afternoon when we got home from errands after the interview and watched our favorite Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus.

I’m tired of waiting. I’m ready for Saturday. I couldn’t have said that last week, there was still too much to do. I don’t want to rush this week along, but I’m at that place where I’ve spent so much time working on the wedding that now that I’ve nothing to do I’m almost more anxious.

I have a great deal of head pain which removes sleep from the equation but I’m going to try and go back to bed for a few hours and see if I can start again.

I have planned and planned and coordinated until I can’t anymore but I haven’t really focused on how lovely it will be to stand in front of God and the people I love most and join my life to YBW’s.
Just writing that sentence helped.
The idea of the love of the people in that room to support and bless us brings me great hope. Saying the words I wrote just for him, being prayed over, and sealing it all with a kiss really makes it feel worth the anxiety.

If it is a dog and pony show, well it’s our dog and pony show and that’s all that matters.
