I saw this post on Stephen Satterfield‘s instagram. It spoke to me in a way I must have needed that day. I created a screenshot and looked at it every day since.
You can see the pic isn’t all that much to write home about, though I am a fan of sunset photos.
No, what got me was his caption.
If it’s in your head then you gotta let it out. If it’s in your chest then put it in the air. If it’s in your heart then put it in the world. Don’t be scared. Even if you are. Find your center and sit there. God don’t need to pray, just us. Listen with conviction.
I’m still mulling over these words, figuring out how to apply them to the place they piqued inside me.
If it’s in you, get it out into the world. (But also) listen with conviction.
Isn’t that why we write?
Isn’t that why we read?
Isn’t that why we converse?
Isn’t that why we have relationships with family and friends?
Don’t be scared. Even if you are.
We tell Baby K how brave she is when she does something that makes her nervous. She replies that she isn’t/wasn’t brave, she is/was scared. We explain that being brave is doing the thing even though you’re scared.
This feels similar yet different. Yes, be brave and do the things that frighten you, but also don’t be frightened about expressing your truth.
The world will kick your ass and send you running. And that can be frightening, but if you’re sitting firmly in your center, you have nothing to fear.
Did these words find me off center?
They did remind me to pay attention. To myself. To the world around me.
If we’re planted firmly in our own center can we express ourselves and listen to the world around us without fear?
What do y’all think?

have (legit won) an Olympic Gold Medal or a Nobel Prize
Nobel Prize (for literature, natch…or maybe peace, because why the hell not?)
have a dog that hummed or a cat that whistled
Except for Izzy, who yowled for her own entertainment, every cat I’ve ever had was pretty quiet so I feel confident that there would only be occasional whistling
have one wish granted today or three wishes granted five years from now
I’ll take my wish now please and thank you
not so much because I’m incapable of delaying my gratification, but because one wish would do me
go camping or go to Las Vegas
and however much I excel at it I cannot express to y’all the passion with which I hate to camp
never be able to wear makeup or only wear one color for the rest of your life
I have blonde eyebrows – I need mascara.
and if I could only ever wear blue or green that would work for me…
What about y’all?
What would you rather?
be an unimportant character in the last movie you saw or an unimportant character in the last book you read
the last movie I saw was The Return of the King
the last book I read was Morningside Heights
Absolutely no question, sign me up for some elf ears in LotR!
know how above or below average you are at everything or know how above or below average people are at one skill/talent just by looking at them
I feel like I have a pretty good handle on my own skill level, even if I underplay those I’m actually a bit better at. Therefore I choose to know the skills of others. This would be helpful in all manner of situations.
have the ability to mute people at will or pause people for five seconds at a time, but only once an hour
M U T E!
I cannot tell you how often I just want people to shut the fuck up.
be able to control fire or water
If Avatar: The Last Airbender taught me anything it’s that even though I’m a fixed earth sign I’d be a water bender. And I’d use my bending to be a healer.
rather never be stuck in traffic again or never get another cold
never ever ever stuck in traffic again FTW!
master every musical instrument or be fluent in every language
fluent in every language all day every day
go bald or forever be cursed with terrible haircuts
bad haircuts are the absolute worst and I can always accessorize with hats and wigs
have fame and fortune or love and wisdom
love and wisdom
fame is a fickle bitch, and fortunes can be lost – love can also be lost, but I value it more, and wisdom only grows
live in a cave or live in a tree house
tree house x infinity
especially if it could be like Henry and Amy’s
King, Stephen Michael. Henry and Amy (right-way-round and upside down). New York, Walker and Company, 1998.
first contact extraterrestrials be robotic or organic
if they’re robotic, that means someone/thing else is controlling them and I feel like that doesn’t necessarily bode well…
What about y’all?
What would you rather?
travel the world for a year on a shoestring budget or stay in only one country for a year but live in luxury
this is a tricky one…
I’m not sure a year long enough to see the entire world, especially on a limited budget. But, spending an entire year in one country would provide quite the opportunity to explore every aspect…I’m looking at you, Italy.
I choose staying luxuriously in one country
every third thought you have be out loud or never be alone no matter what you are doing
every third thought
After a while I’d learn to manage the timing and not express too many inappropriate thoughts…
take an all expenses paid dream vacation every year for a month or have the job of your dreams
Another tricky one!
Why do I do this to myself?
While a free month long vacay sounds divine, real life is in those other eleven months.
I choose dream job!
be a successful artist or a successful business owner
Unless…my successful business involved my art…?
I don’t think this is a have your cake and eat it too sort of situation…so I’ll stick with my initial answer.
be covered in fur or covered in scales
even though I’d be hot covered in fur, the idea of being covered in scales freaks me out
What about y’all?
What would you rather?
have a bottomless box of Legos or a bottomless gas tank
Bottomless gas tank.
Oh the place’s I’ll go…
have unlimited sushi for life or unlimited tacos for life
go back to age 5 with everything you know now or know now everything your future self will learn
I’m not sure five year old anyone is capable of managing the emotional weight of knowing what adult them knows. I’m choosing knowing now what future me will know.
see what was behind every closed door or be able to guess the combination of every safe on the first try
While it sounds kind of cool, in reality, how much access do or will I have to random safes? But I come across doors every day of my life. I choose doors.
have all your clothes fit perfectly or have the most comfortable pillow, blankets, and sheets in existence
Perfectly fitted clothes all day every day.
not be able to stop dancing or not stop singing
Not stop singing…?
This one borders on ridiculous. Why do I do this to myself?
have skin that changes color based on your emotions or tattoos appear all over your body depicting what you did yesterday
Color changing skin. Honestly, how cool would that be?
only be able to jump everywhere you go or only be able to walk on your hands
I think either of these would become tedious after a while, but I’m going to say jump. I don’t think I’d like to be upside down all the damn time.
be able to teleport anywhere or be able to read minds
T E L E P O R T!
have a completely automated home or a self-driving car
I choose automated home all day, baby.
be forced to dance every time you heard music or be forced to sing along to any song you heard
I feel like I do both of these already…I guess the difference is it happening organically, or by force…?
I think I’ll choose dance because I don’t always know the words to every song I hear.
not shower for a week or not brush your teeth for a week
My teeth gotta be clean, yo.
lose the ability to hear or lose the ability to walk
Of course I can hear the train whistle as I’m writing this.
Actually, I’m going to choose lose the ability to walk. I can still get around other ways.
eat your favorite meal for every meal for the rest of your life or never be able to eat your favorite meal again
Never eat my favorite meal again.
I could cherry-pick bits and pieces from my favorite meal and put them into others.
have to read aloud every word you read or sing everything you say out loud
I feel like I should choose read aloud the words I read, but I’m going to choose sing everything I say.
I don’t actually know, but I’m trusting my gut on this one.
What would y’all rather?
be able to see 10 minutes into your own future or 10 minutes into the future of anyone but yourself
I fear, like Cassandra, my words would fall upon deaf ears if I spoke of other people’s futures. And that would be more painful to me than knowing what was coming my way. So, I choose being able to see into my own future.
be the absolute ruler in a tiny country or an important politician among many other important politicians in a large powerful country
(a picture’s worth a thousand words)
ask for help or figure it out yourself
While I’m much more of a do it myself kind of girl, I’m not above asking for help.
TBPH, it depends on the situation and who I’m asking.
But for the sake of this would you rather, I choose figure it out myself.
have unlimited international first-class tickets or never have to pay for food at restaurants
In concept, I’m all about unlimited first-class tickets. But…would I have the time, the resources, the traveling companion to jet off as I’d like?
Not paying for restaurant food opens never ending dining opportunities the likes of which I can barely imagine. How many times a week would I eat lunch from Nando’s, or grab a berry lemonade at Mod Pizza, or have a Duck Donut on the way to the grocery store? To how many restaurants could I take my food loving husband?
I think I’m going to go with food on this one.
be able to dodge anything no matter how fast it’s moving or be able to ask any three questions and have them answered accurately
Being Neo could have it’s advantages, but I’m not often in a situation in which I need to dodge things.
And one of my three wishes is to have my questions answered with truths, so I choose three questions answered accurately.
What would y’all rather?
have all traffic lights you approach be green or never have to stand in line again
Red lights are an acceptable wait time, and I despise standing in line. Without doubt I choose never queuing up again!
have telepathy or telekinesis
My intuition is strong. My ability to read others is well defined. And to be perfectly honest, I don’t want to know every thought every person has every moment they have it.
Mastering telekinesis could be great fun!
have whatever you think appear above your head for everyone to see or have everything you do live streamed for anyone to see
I’d rather not advertise my thoughts, but I’m a pretty awkward individual, so do I want everything I do to live stream for anyone to watch? Though, people may not watch me, but anyone I actually interact with would see my thoughts.
Is there a clear winner here? I think not.
I’m going to have to go with live streaming my life and hope nobody watches, because sometimes what I think isn’t fit for human consumption.
know everything or be amazing at any activity you tried
All! The! Knowledge!
be an amazing dancer or an amazing singer
When I was a little girl I wanted desperately to be a Prima Ballerina. Alas, I’ve two left feet as it were…
I was trained as a singer in both church and school choirs. Without practice that skill faded, but not entirely. I sing well enough as it stands.
So I’m going to pick amazing dancer to fulfill my childhood dream. I can still sing at an average level in my spare time.
