road trip baggage and snacks

Hi, my name is Robyn and I’m an over-packer.
Hi Robyn.

It is what it is, y’all.

I’m in Charleston for the next five days. Spending time with Sally and her fam and my beloved Jessica.
I don’t need this much stuff.
As I was pulling things out and laying them on my bed in preparation to pack I was aware that there was more than I needed.
It’s just my thing. (one of my many ‘things’)
I over pack.
I can’t rely on the exact number of (whatevers) being the right amount! You never know if you’re going to spill something on yourself. Or sneeze and pee your pants. Or just be sick of wearing something and want to change.
I want options.
And here’s the truth, I’m carrying the bag(s) so I can choose to fill or not as I see fit.

The one and only time I didn’t over pack, when I took exactly what I needed with nothing to spare, the weather was different than forcasted, we did different things than expected, and I had to borrow a pair of shoes from Thing 1.
NEVER AGAIN!

You might say, “One girl doesn’t need that many pairs of shoes for five days.”
To that I say, “First of all, up yours.”
I have one pair that I intend to wear with one particular dress. The dress and shoes ‘should’ have been left in the closet. But I love the dress and wanted to wear it in Charleston. And sure, other shoes would do, but these are the ones that I love best with the dress. So I packed them.
Again, I’m carrying the bag(s) therefore I make the decisions.
(After the photo was taken, I added two pairs of shoes.)

On another note…
YBW hugged me for the fifth time the morning I left and said, “The bag beside your purse is for you to take on the trip.” I got all smiley, and he said, “It’s not a present, it’s just me taking care of you.”

Y’all!
Look at this!

He packed my insulated lunch bag!
He was worried I wouldn’t eat while I was on the road.

Inside there was cheese, apples, mixed nuts, two pieces of Halloween candy I took from our bucket, and diet DP.
He packed me the perfect road trip snacks! Good protein, something sweet, and caffeine to keep me going when it gets late and I’ve still got miles to go.
And(!!!) Two packs of spearmint gum in the outside pocket. One to replace the nearly empty one in my purse, the other as ‘in case of gum emergency’ gum to have in the car!
I’m grateful to YBW for making my car lunch (and dinner)! It was kind, and I appreciate his thoughtfulness!

these shoes were made for walkin’ (down the aisle)

There was a box on my front porch when I got home.
In that box there are three more boxes.
In those boxes are shoes.

SHOES FOR THE WEDDING!!!
OHMYGODIMSOEXCITEDICANHARDLYSTANDMYSELF!!!

I was home alone with this box of shoes.
I pranced, skipped, hopped, danced, ran, jumped, and “foot popped” in my perfect shoes. I sent photos to Thing 1 and Thing 2. I sent photos to Sundance. Nobody responded.
I pranced around a little bit more and called Thing 2. Voicemail. UGH!
Little bit of James Brown inspired foot work and called Sundance. Voicemail. COME ON!
Little hop, skip and a jump and called Thing 1…”Hi Momma.” (Success!)

YBW came home right as I was getting off the phone with Thing 1 and he started opening the box. I said: I want you to see mine last.
I showed him Thing 1’s classic pumps. She has really weird looking toes and refuses to wear open-toed shoes, which really limits her choices. These Badgley Mischka’s are FIERCE! (Who let Stacy London up in here?)

They’re going to be fuchsia.

Thing 2’s Pelle Moda shoes are a bit stripper-ish but so very, very Thing 2.

They’re going to be fuchsia.

These are my shoes. They’re going to be navy even though there is a little “something blue” on the bottom.

I was so excited to show YBW that I was literally panting!
I pointed at my feet and said: These make it real! Not this!(pointing at my ring) These! I’m going to marry the most perfect boy in the most perfect shoes and it’s going to be the most perfect day ever!

He said he’s never seen me so excited in all the years he’s known me. He just watched me with this great big smile on his face. (While I literally grabbed him by his upper arms and shook him while I was panting and squealing.) That man absolutely loves me. He must, I totally told him my shoes are better than my diamond. Luckily he knows me well enough to know what I mean.

Thanks, UPS man, for coming to my house today! SUPER SMILEY Robynbird!

save the date

I had this idea for what our save the dates would look like for a really long time.
It finally came down to what shoes I would wear. I had several boxes on my bed, a different shoe on each foot and nothing seemed quite right.
Then YBW said: You should wear your flip flops.
It was an AHA! moment!

When I was in SC I pretty much lived in my Havaianas. YBW has always teased that they’re not “proper shoes” and I should cover my feet. (I have pretty feet, just so you know.)
So when he suggested I wear my favorite rubber flip flops it felt so natural to me. The photo represents us accurately. I feel like it celebrates our playfulness as a couple and our differences as individuals.

The date runs up the right side on the actual card in bold white numbers. 10.24.15

The best part was the actual photo shoot, we two in our side yard with the camera on the small tripod on one of the kitchen stools me running back and forth between setting up the shot and being in it.
We laughed so much!
It was so very “us”.

When I was visiting in Arizona, my friend’s husband said to me: Tell me about YBW, all I know about him is that he has red shoes.
This amused me.
It also confirmed what I already knew, our save the date card playfully represents who we are as a couple and was absolutely the right choice.
