Sunday morning at the home site 12.27.20

Third floor is up!
We have a bedroom level now.

It was in the twenties Sunday morning. Damn cold even bundled up.
Baby K and her parents joined us, but after a bit of trying to break the ice over the puddles, she got too cold and they went to wait in the car.

This is from that same spot in the garage that will eventually be under the stairs. I’m shooting towards the back of the house this time. That open space on the third level will be our bedroom.

I’ve not yet shared the back of the house, and I couldn’t back up any more without falling down the hill, so this is as much as you’ll be able to see.

On the ground level you can see what will be YBW’s office space. French door on the left and double window on the right.
Above that, the telescopic sliding door in the living room that will lead to an open deck.
On the third floor, the windows on the left are in our bedroom, the high window on the right is above the double vanity in our bathroom.

Sunday morning at the home site 12.20.20

Y’all!!
We have a second story!

That bump out part over the garage is the dining room.
The window all the way to the right above the front door is the powder room.

It was cool and sunny this Sunday morning and once again, Thing 1 and Baby K joined us for our weekly visit.
After the snow last week, the site was so muddy, the concrete floor of the house was puddled up, and water dripped on us while we were inside.

Baby K climbs down from underneath where the front stairs will be into the garage while her Papa (YBW) takes photos.

She was being super careful!

I took this shot standing in the garage under where the stairs will be. I’m facing out the front of the house so what you can see above will be the top of the first flight of stairs, the pantry, and the powder room. Down below you can see the top of the front door.

I love exploring the build site. I love engaging the building process. I love sharing it with y’all!

Sunday morning at the home site 12.13.20

Sunday morning was sunny and almost warm when we went over to the new house.

OH MY GOODNESS!
So! Much! Squee!
We have an actual ground floor!

Thing 1 and Baby K came with us again this week.

I’m in the garage and Baby K is standing in (what will be) the bathtub in the ground floor bathroom. Thing 1 is slipping through from the mechanical closet. YBW is in the background taking a photo of…the floor…? Must remember to ask him.

Baby K picked up each of these items. The pieces of concrete and the washer were in the pocket of her hoodie. I carried the nail, screw, and nut for her. I’m adding this to the rocks she brought home in the previous weeks.
Maybe I’ll find a way to incorporate her collection into the decor of her room at the new house.

I know

But being there was even more exciting than I expected!
It gets more real each week, y’all and I am SO here for it!

Sunday mornings at the home site

YBW walks by our homesite almost every day. He shows me the photos he takes and we discuss what’s new. I love that he’s keeping me informed. But that wasn’t good enough for him. He wants me to experience the process as much as possible. So, we’ve started going over early on Sunday mornings.
Nobody’s working. We’re not disturbing anyone or anything. We can check out everything at our leisure. (YBW can scratch our surname into the not-quite-cured foundation with a concrete nail.) We can explore the site and take photos of the progress.

November 22.

It was gray and damp and we went alone.

November 29.

It was sunny and chilly.
We have ground floor foundation!

This Sunday we had company.

The step in the foreground is where our house ends and the next one begins. Baby K climbed that step and danced around on the neighboring foundations.
Cutie pants!

Decebmer 6.

It was damn cold and the wind was bitter.
Garage foundation poured and lumber delivered!

We had company this Sunday too.

Y’all might think we posed this pic, but we didn’t.
Baby K was fascinated by the hard-core fork lift. She sat right down on that big ass fork and giggled.
Maybe Santa should bring her construction equipment…?

It gets more real each week and we’re SO excited!

it’s all happening

The foundation footers were poured Friday last at the new house!
We went over there Sunday morning to take a look around.

This is the back right corner of the house looking towards the front, the rise in the foundation is where the garage begins.

Y’all!

late night wallpaper browsing

The other night when I couldn’t sleep I got online and started looking at wallpaper.
I know. I know. How random can one girl be?
Pretty freaking random.
But, decor!

I want to do some bold dramatic wallpaper in a couple of places in the new house. At least one wall of the main level powder room, the laundry room, and the ceiling of our bedroom.

Wallpaper has a bad rap, you know? Like, it’s old fashioned, something to do with a grandmother’s house, that kind of stuff. But I gotta tell you, I’m totally feeling some of the wallpaper I saw the other night.

I’m particularly obsessed with this water color floral from Olivia + Poppy.

It’s just whimsical enough to interest me without being ‘too much’ and I’m feeling it for my laundry room.
Maybe.
I mean, I just started looking, right?

Another thing I’m obsessing over is organization.
The Container Store has this Elfa system I’m planning to use on the door of the pantry.

Between this place, Target, and Home Goods, I’m going to have a seriously gorgeous organizational situation in the new house!

YBW has finalized his must haves to make the house smart. I’m riding shotgun on that, but enthusiastic about being able to say, “Zhu Li, do the thing.”
He’s spent time researching his most desired things and creating a color coded key on copies of the floor plans to make sure he’s got it all exactly where he wants it.
Y’all, watching him with those colored pencils fed my dork soul!

I don’t know where he’s going to land on the wallpaper front, but I’m confident his opinion is positive when it comes to organization.
It’s cool, cause while I know where I land on the wallpaper front, I’ll enjoy the looking until I make some choices.

the hard hat tour

YBW and I are planning to move.
We have chosen the perfect home in the perfect spot.

These townhomes are within walking distance to YBW’s office. Literally right across the street from our favorite grocery store. And closer to the university where I’ll be spending so much time in the next two years.
We’ve been tracking this neighborhood since the first rumors of building in the area began.
We’ve become rather friendly with the sales staff. They know exactly which unit in which building we want. They know we’re unwilling to settle for anything else.

Of course as with all building everything happens in phases.
The unit we want is in the far end of the fourth building, which is the end of the second building phase. The builder opened the first two buildings for deposits before construction even started, but put sales on hold for a while until building really gets going. Of the first fifteen units, there are only four or five that remain.
The latest information we have is deposits for the third building will open in the spring, and for the fourth building in the late summer or early fall. Each with delivery approximately a year after.

Saturday afternoon the sales office hosted a ‘hard hat tour’.
An invitation to come ask questions, have nibbles, and check out construction.
Also in this new neighborhood there are smaller townhomes and multi level condos. These units were open for touring in their initial state of construction. The larger townhomes (the ones we’re interested in) only have preliminary building started.
After chatting with the sales staff and getting an updated deposit date, YBW and I bundled up to brave snow, sleet, and cold winds to check out the new construction and walk the property to where our building will be.

This snow covered pile of rocks and semi-frozen mud upon which YBW stands is where we plan to live in late summer/early fall 2021.

It’s an interesting bit of living and retail space in a larger office and (light) industrial area. But none of it feels out of place. The development of the area makes sense for the way people in Northern Virginia live.
We’re looking forward to being in a less suburban area. We like the idea of being able to walk more and drive less. And YBW is all about walking to and from work every day!

There are walking trails and an adorable creek down the hill behind the building site.

Of course it’ll be prettier in the spring, summer, and fall than it is now, but even now, it’s not too bad.

While we’re excited about the prospect of making this our home, we’re keeping in the back of our mind that it may not go the way we plan.
But, we’re doing everything we can to make sure it goes our way.
I am hopeful our plans will become reality.
I have faith that this is meant for us.
I can be mindful and excited at the same time.
