no tiny wine plant in here

YBW and I made a whirlwind thirty-six hour weekend trip to NYC to see Alan Cumming in Cabaret and I documented the trip via Snapchat. It was out of character for me to not pull out the Lumix…but I felt playful and wanted to do something completely different.

Thing 2 sent this in reply to a pic of YBW and me in the security line:

(A tiny wine plant being a reference to the movie French Kiss.)

To which I replied:

I sat in the absolute worst spot waiting to board the plane:

(A la the knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.)

We rode the E train from JFK to 7th Avenue:

(Their subway is FOUL!)

Checking in at the Wellington:

Walking through the park just the other day baby. Whaddya, whaddya think I saw?:

(It was 12 degrees but we loved it.)

A trip to the Met after the long walk through the park wore us out…we sat in the floor for a while, YBW Ingressed and I gave my still healing foot a rest.

Our view was pretty though:

Dinner before the play. Two pints of my beloved Harp:

(YBW asked me not to take pics while Alan Cumming was on stage so as not to get us thrown out, please and thank you.)

Whirlwind but SO MUCH FUN!

I’m glad I’m writing again.
After a three month term break, I’m back to school…
My co-teacher and I are committed to bringing Dot to life…
These things will take time, but I will MAKE time to write…for me and for you.

Life isn’t always a cabaret old chum, but we can leave our troubles outside.

every picture tells a story

I’m going through photos from our summer trip to Memphis to create a collage for the naked walls in the basement and I came across this one.

20140729_7

This man works as a ticket taker at Autozone Park where the Memphis Redbirds call home. He fascinated me and I shot a couple of pics of him as we were entering the park.

I captured him in a moment between laughter and conversations with spectators, some of whom he knew personally. It was a perfect accident to catch him in this brief moment of quiet thought.
I love his face.
I don’t even pretend to imagine what this man has experienced in his life. But I suspect he’s done it well.

The Redbirds kicked the holy hell out of the Kansas City Cyclones that night. YBW and I drank quite a bit of beer and the Redbirds catcher tossed a foul ball up to Thing G.
It was a great night at the ballpark. But that man is what I remember most when I think about that night. He fascinated me.

It’s been said that every picture tells a story.
This man moved me enough to take his picture.
I’ll never know his story, but I have his photograph and that is enough for me.

road kill musings

As I was driving this morning I saw a dead opossum lying in the gutter and felt a bit of sadness.
I said: (Out loud, even though I was in the car alone.) Poor opossum.
I immediately though: What ridiculous spelling: O-P-O-S-S-U-M. Don’t even need the O.
After which I said: (Once again out loud.) Words are weird!

Words are weird? Apparently that is the extent of my “cleverness” today.
What a sad state of affairs…I think I’m the one who’s weird.

(Forgive me because I’m still giggling.)

Y’all come now, ya hear?

The room that was originally built as an eclectic teen space for Thing 2 has been re-imagined into a serene retreat. A place I will occasionally visit when I need to “go away for the weekend” but not really leave home. My friend and mentor has claimed it as her own, much to by YBW’s and my delight. Now to get her here from Charleston…
I’m pleased with the way it turned out and look forward to folks I love coming to lay their head and stay with us a while.

The en suite bathroom has yet to be painted, though I’ve finally settled on a color choice. The enormous closet is filled with boxes and boxes line the wall. Boxes of my family things that came home to me from Richmond and the with holidays I haven’t made time to unpack and sort.
I’ll get around to that pretty quickly. I’m itching to see what’s in those boxes and ready for the mini project of painting that bathroom.

Y'all come now, ya hear?

at the Cathedral

20141226_150707
This is the only photo from the Cathedral. It was taken with my phone as we arrived. I liked the light and stopped to capture it. My camera’s SD card went wonky and every single photo I took is lost, mushed up in one big half gig file. A recovery effort is in progress…but I’m not sure it’ll produce anything.
YBW says I should reformat the SD card…I’m leaning towards chucking it and getting a new one…we’ll see how it goes.

Though I’m sad there are no pics it didn’t make the trip any less wonderful. I saw nativities made of every imaginable medium and from all around the world. My favorite this year was made of terracotta from Argentina, it had the most adorable angels!

Apparently YBW fell down circular steps made of stone, but I missed it because I was in St Joseph’s Chapel taking pictures and communing. He told me the story when he caught me coming down the very same steps. (I didn’t fall.)
I stopped to light a candle and say a prayer in this teeny chapel where the stairs came down before moving upstairs to the Bethlehem Chapel.

I took so many photos, It breaks my heart not to be able to see any of them. But I felt peaceful and full of love after spending this beautiful day with YBW and the baby Jesus.

out of room

image

I got this stack of books for Christmas! I’m rather excited about them, but looking at my shelves I realize I haven’t any room to put them.
Trip to IKEA, anyone?

Not today! Going to the Cathedral to oodgie goodgie at the nativity display. Wild horses couldn’t keep me from that today!
Then to the trees on the ellipse and a dinner date with YBW.
Have I mentioned how much I adore Christmas?

for unto us a Child is born

My joy is great this Christmas day. Santa left me the loveliest gift.

But the very best part is the baby Jesus and his Momma.

I wish everyone the love I feel today.

Happy Christmas Eve

Thing C and Thing G go from our home here to their mom’s home this afternoon so we our had Christmas today. Well, they did and YBW and I opened some things, we’re saving some for tomorrow when it’s just we two. After we opened pressies we had breakfast with mimosas.
Everybody seems happy with their pressies…and I’m a little bit tipsy!

Christmas eve is also my beloved sister-in-law’s birthday. Even though I’m no longer married to her brother she and I will always be family. I miss the days when we would celebrate her birthday with delicious white birthday cake and Veuve Clicquot. We aren’t near enough to celebrate her birthday like that anymore, so we’ll just have to do it another time of year. I wish her every heart’s happiness today.

I feel sad that I’m not with my own two Things to celebrate Christmas. But I am happy because it’s my absolute favorite time of year.
I hope everyone feels as lovely as I do today! (And not only because of the mimosas.)

working hard today (not so much)

Because we have so few children at school today all the three year old classes have been combined into my classroom. My co-teacher and I decided it’s going to be a movie day…this is something we NEVER do…but today we’re watching Rudolph and LOVING it!
Frosty is up next and you know, there is a certain magic in the first snow.
